Sharing some crossover terrain with Genius, 14 tracks to be exact, is Charlie Parker and Miles Davis’ Blue Bird: Legendary Savoy Sessions. A compilation of six sessions from 1945-1948 by the Charlie Parker Quintet, featuring Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and John Lewis on 23 legendary cuts.

Right off the bat on “Billie’s Bounce” the young Miles asserts his place within the group warming up to the dynamic runs of “Klaunstance” with a call and response with Bird. On “Bird Gets the Worm” Miles is bursting at the seams, matching Bird in intensity and notes. But it wouldn’t be Parker’s quintet without his signature playing on “Donna Lee”, “Now’s the Time” and “Blue Bird”. “Meandering” has Dizzy Gillespie on a rare turn at the piano and “Donna Lee” foreshadows the genius of Bud Powell’s own combos. Titi ROBIN - Ces vagues que l'amour soulève (2005)

Un bruit de vague lointain berce la nuit. Une chouette hulule. Le chant rajasthani d’une femme résonne dans le vent. Un bouzouq, sorte de guitare orientale, lui répond. Suivent les percussions, caf et pharsi. Avec Titi Robin, la musique se transforme en voyage des sens. En vingt ans et six albums, Thierry dit « titi » s’est construit un univers à lui. Il est né en France, mais c’est dans les cultures orientales et gitane qu’ils trouvent l’inspiration. Sur « Ces vagues que l’amour soulève », une nouvelle fois, ces cultures flirtent sans se mélanger, soulignant le meilleur de chacune. Subtilement, les sonorités ibériques glissent vers un arrangement plus arabisant, donnant à la musique de Titi Robin un tour universel. Accordéon, percus, bouzouq, oud, basse, cajon, guitares, palmas, jaleos se succèdent, dialoguent, parfois, un orchestre à corde les rejoint. Peu de chant, juste assez pour colorer d’humanité les morceaux. Sur ces disques précédents, Titi avait l’habitude d’inviter les musiciens qu’il admire à enregistrer avec lui. Ils ne le
suivaient pas forcément en tournée. Cette fois, il a travaillé avec une « bande rapprochée » de musiciens avec qui il travaille régulièrement, comme le chanteur flamenco Jose Montealegre. Sur « Ghazal andalou », ce dernier interprète un chant gitan à couper le souffle. Difficile de trouver plus de mots. Titi Robin touche à l’émotion pure.

One of three simultaneously released budget-priced Alligator blues compilations (the other two are Crucial Guitar Blues and Crucial Chicago Blues), Crucial Harmonica Blues is a 12-track anthology of the Chicago-based label's most popular and legendary harp artists. The track list reads like a who's who of harmonica with James Cotton, Big Walter Horton, Charlie Musselwhite, Carey Bell, Billy Boy Arnold, and Sonny Terry all contributing a track apiece. The tunes cover the years from 1972-2002 (practically spanning the label's existence) as well as a variety of blues settings. Acoustic Piedmont style is handled by Cephas & Wiggins with an instrumental showcase called "Burn Your Bridges" that proves non-amplified playing can be just as fiery as the electric approach favored by the majority of these artists. Those who enjoy speed over emotion can latch onto Sugar Blue's lip-shredding attack on "One More Mile to Go," or William Clarke's husky playing on the appropriately titled "Blowin' Like Hell." A jazzier West Coast style is exemplified by Little Charlie & the Nightcats' "Coastin' Hank," a showpiece for the great Rick Estrin. "Broke and Hungry" from the label's 1990 Harp Attack! showcase features both Junior Wells and Billy Branch. Liner notes only advertise the albums these tunes are culled from and the lack of personnel is a significant omission even if this is a budget-priced release. As a sampler though, this is an effective way to taste the label's harp roster and should introduce all but hardcore fans to names they might not have known before. ~ Hal Horowitz,

While John Cage never wrote anything you'd call Classical Top 40, his music up to 1950 is far more accessible than the random and chance-influenced pieces he created later on. These mysterious, wispy pieces sound as though they were written for a small ensemble of ghostly percussion instruments, although they are played by a single performer playing a piano with various gadgets attached to the strings. You need the clear sound of this recent digital recording to appreciate the music, and Karis keeps everything moving without overstressing the rhythms.

I ran into Dave Grissom at the PRS booth while I was down in Austin, TX for Summer NAMM. He was making an appearance to help promote his new Paul Reed Smith Signature Guitar - The DTS. After meeting with some of the PRS execs I had a chance to talk with Dave a bit about items ranging from his show that night with Storyville, his new signature guitar, recent projects - which led us to his new solo CD entitled Loud Music.

For any of you out there who have been living under a rock for your guitar playing life, David Grissom has toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in music today; ranging from John Mellencamp, Chris Isaak, Allman Brothers, John Mayall, Buddy Guy, The Dixie Chicks, Kevin Fowler, James McMurtry, Joe Ely, to name a few. Trisha Yearwood, Lee Ann Womack, Shannon Curfman, Storyville, and more have recorded many of David's songs.

Dave's new CD is appropriately titled. As a guitar player my first thought was that, ahh yes, Loud Music is about a guitarist's self-centered-love of turning one's amp and axe up to ear bursting decibels. As a player there is nothing better, yes? Well, at least until the time that the girlfriend or wife somehow finds a way to yell louder, telling you to shut the hell up. But once I popped the disc into the CD player, I realized that David's songs automatically turn themselves up when played - sometimes the volume to heights that may bring on vertigo. But you'll be glad you did.

Right out of the wrapper Loud Music is a guitar players delight. Dave's big overdriven tones and chunky chords flare and roll out of the speakers. The album is a mix of instrumental guitar and sing-along-rock-anthems. Trust me you'll throw up a rock salute while you're head bobs back and forth on many of these tunes.

Dave Grissom is a monster rock guitar player. His tone will drop you on your ass. Dave's thunderous tone cracks right through on the record. From the opening licks and thrust of the album's opener. "Lonesome Dave" to the bright and crisp tones on "Wide Lode," you'll get an earful of masterful instrumental guitar playing.

Even though Dave Grissom is mostly known for his masterful guitar work, his vocal chops are excellent as well on tunes like the title track "Loud Music," "Nothing Makes a Man Go Crazy," and "Whiskey Cryin." The last two are a part of the smoother, softer side of the record. On the beautifully written ballad, "Nothing Makes a Man Go Crazy," Grissom sings soulfully and with his heart on his sleeve, making it one of the highlights on the album. It made a believer out of me.

The multi-talented Dave Grissom just also happens to be one of the best songwriters in the music business today. The songs he's written like "Midnight Drive" and the songs above on this album are timeless pieces with hooks, changes, choruses and lyrics that will make most who write songs just crumple up the paper and shoot for three. He's a brilliant wordsmith and master of the music craft, period.

Dave Grissom is a huge and rare talent. It's no wonder that Paul Reed Smith partnered with him on the development and release of Dave's signature DTS model. If others were smart, they should start figuring out ways to jump on board as well.

Loud Music is a turn-it-up-and feel-good guitar album. Every tune on the record feels fresh with a unique vibe - and that's not an easy thing to pull off for any artist, no matter what genre of music. You'll find a range of rock, blues, country, honky-tonk, and pop. There are no throwaways or filler on the album. You get the best from Grissom on Loud Music with huge guitar tone and chops, brilliant songwriting, smart lyrics, quality vocals, and a mix of rock music that will, if played right, will give your ears a good kind of ring.

As a former pupil of Elliott Carter, David Schiff’s lucid opera, Gimpel the Fool, is based on one of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s best known stories. It tells of a good man deceived by his wife who yet, in the end (well, after the end, as she is already dead when the opera begins), can forgive her infidelities. Indeed, Schiff´s notes tell us that it was the story’s very Judaic character that attracted him in the first place. Schiff’s “klezmer” tunes include saxophone, keyboards, mandolin and accordion against the backdrop of Yiddish themes that predominate among sly Stravinskyesque touches that make their unexpected cameo appearances.

This CD evidently originates from a fan's home taping of a European radio broadcast of a concert by the Oscar Peterson Trio in Vienna on November 9, 1968. An announcer is briefly heard over the introduction but, other than that, the only flaws occur as the recording level is occasionally overmodulated, resulting in some distortion (but not so much that it is unlistenable). In spite of the sound problems, the pianist is in top form, joined by bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham, for a set that relies mainly on some of Peterson's favorite standards ("The Lamp Is Low" and "Someday My Prince Will Come") as well as Neal Hefti's "Little Darlin'," Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby," and the leader's "Never Say Yes" and "Noreen's Nocturne." Compared to the immense quantity of commercial releases available by Oscar Peterson, especially live albums, this one can't be considered essential, but completists won't be disappointed with the consistently outstanding performances on this 71- minute CD. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Like a mink draped over mahogany, Diana Krall's luxuriously supple alto adorns the vintage songs of romance and longing found on Love Scenes with a palpable aura of glamour and late-night cool. Her ostensibly effortless command of phrasing and intonation, whether the mood is seduction or a sweet sassiness, further fortifies the opinion that the Canadian vocalist-pianist possesses one of the great female jazz voices to surface in the late 1990s. Augmented by spare but skillful instrumentation from bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, Krall sustains a largely quiet (though hardly sleepy) ambience throughout the CD's 12 selections, from Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky)," which she also uses as a showcase for her touch at the keyboard, to Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away from Me." Her swing is artfully subdued ("All or Nothing at All"), and her wry, expressive approach to "Peel Me a Grape" is pure charm. Yet Krall shines most luminously on languid gems such as "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You" and "Garden in the Rain." Anyone in search of an album ideal for watching city lights at 2 a.m. should keep Love Scenes in mind. --Terry Wood

When my producer, Tommy LiPuma, and I were deciding on the songs for my newest CD, it never occurred to me that the songs we ultimately chose would be all about love. I selected songs that I personally liked, and that had a special meaning for me. However, as is often the case during the creative process, a connection among the songs just seemed to organically appear. The songs are indeed about romance. But to me there is a broader and more personal attachment to each of the songs than the standard definition of romantic love might imply. I think that these songs represent the strength of love, including the love of family and friends. But rather than describing my own thoughts about each song, it is my hope that all of you who listen to the music and read the lyrics will discover and imagine your own personal "love scenes" among the mountains, oceans, rain and gardens of these songs.

Preceding Breezin', his crossover smash for Warner in 1978, Bad Benson shows the guitarist still hanging on to his Wes Montgomery roots in places while stretching his soul-jazz persona into even funkier arenas. CTI had a formula for making funky, accessible jazz and fusion records that in 1974 still held true. Arranged by Don Sebesky, Bad Benson is a collection of delicious, varied, and sometimes confusing choices. Benson's own playing is precise and smooth as always, and guitarist Phil Upchurch keeps a large color palette for him to draw from, as in the funkified version of "Take Five." Other notables are the stellar "My Latin Brother," which begins as a Debussy-ian impressionistic string study before becoming a heavily arpeggiated variation on the samba. Kenny Barron's pianism here is the driving force behind a rhythm section that also includes drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Ron Carter. They give Benson a harmonic floor for one of the most inspiring solos of his career. These intensely meaty cuts -- along with Upchurch's stellar swinging in the pocket groover "Full Compass" -- are juxtaposed against ballads such as "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams" and "The Changing World," a pair of ballads that ape Montgomery's later snore-fest session for A&M. Thankfully, Legacy's remastered CD version includes three bonus tracks from the session: a hip and syncopated read of "Take the 'A' Train" (with truly surreal and shimmering colors courtesy of Sebesky's string section) and the amazingly driving, greasy funk of "Serbian Blue," as well as a simply beautiful -- and brief -- solo from Benson called "From Now On." Made for Saydisc with the Carnival Band,this is a recording made in a Quaker meeting house near Bristol,of Christmas carols both known and unknown and using mediaeval instruments for authenticity. An outstanding piece of work with fine versions of "Angels from the realms of Glory" and "It came upon the midnight clear". Maddy Prior sings carols as they are supposed to be sung. Her voice is clear, like a boy treble, and simply amazing, and must be heard to be believed. No awful dirges, but great uplifting singing. Recommmended for Maddy Prior fans, folk fans and carol fans.

Birdy is the first soundtrack and sixth album overall by British rock musician Peter Gabriel, for the movie of the same name, released in 1985. The album marked Gabriel's first work with producer Daniel Lanois.
In addition to composing new pieces for the soundtrack, Gabriel also used instrumental themes and sections from earlier works to form the basis of some tracks. There were, however, no songs with lyrics on the album.

Peter Gabriel's first foray into soundtracks was for Alan Parker's contemplative film Birdy and is a successful companion piece, providing a backdrop that is moody and evocative. Nearly half of the album's dozen tracks incorporate threads from material found on Gabriel's 1982 Security set, including "Close Up," which makes use of keyboard passages from "Family Snapshot," and "The Heat," which is a reworking of "The Rhythm of the Heat" and builds to a frenzied percussive crescendo. Material specially written for this project includes the murky opening track, "At Night," the tribal "Floating Dogs," and "Slow Marimbas," a track which would become part of future live performances. The fact that Birdy is comprised of all instrumentals means that listeners whose familiarity with Gabriel is limited to "Sledgehammer" and "In Your Eyes" will be largely disappointed. However, its meditative nature makes it fine, reflective listening for the more adventurous.

“Badawi was born Raz Mesinai in 1973 in Jerusalem. By spending a lot of time with Bedouins in the Sinai desert as a youngster, he picked up on their unique musical style. An interesting use of genre splicing that combines Middle Eastern folk with ambient noise. Not that The Heretic of Ether is a straight-up ambient record that experiments with the aforementioned traditions, but this hybrid provides a haunting, divergent take on world music. Without using any turntables or samples, Badawi manages to churn out an array of sounds that were performed live in the studio. The end results provide a modern take on a sound that has been performed for centuries as well as something that would have to take time to grow on a listener.

On November 15, 1957, a quintet headed by pianist Red Garland recorded enough material for two records. This CD reissue (whose companion is Soul Junction) has a 20-minute version of "All Mornin' Long," along with briefer renditions of "They Can't Take That Away from Me" (a mere ten minutes) and Tadd Dameron's "Our Delight." More important than the material is that, in addition to Garland, the main soloists are John Coltrane and trumpeter Donald Byrd. Byrd was on his way to getting his sound together, while Trane, very much in his sheets-of-sound period, was already blazing a new path for jazz to follow. An excellent and often quite colorful jam session-flavored hard bop set.

How easy it is to dismiss, ignore, take for granted the brilliance of Red Garland. On the other hand, maybe Coltrane deserves the credit for bringing out the best in these "merely" frontline musicians. "All Mornin' Long" is a Bb blues running over 20 minutes. Coltrane has the first solo--probing, passionate, daring. Time for the ensuing players to run for cover or stand up like real men. Donald Byrd, always a tasteful and melodic if "safe" player, practically goes for broke for a change. He employs some half-valve effects (rare for Byrd) and aims for some upper-register notes that aren't there (no matter--it's one of the few recorded moments when Byrd really reaches). Then it's Red's turn.

Red not only holds his own but makes you forget about what's preceded--not through blazing technique or adventurous innovation but ceaseless invention and an incorporation of every possible style. He alternates "trite" rhythm and blues riffs with breathtakingly lithe, Powell-like single-note lines; he moves to his "stretched" block chord style for two, not just one, extended stretches; he makes the blocked-chord style work at a tempo that would discourage its use by any other pianist. His solo, however harmonically and melodically "conservative," is a tour de force.

Dozens of pianists have borrowed from the Garland vocabulary--Gene Harris, Wynton Kelly, Monty Alexander, Ahmad Jamal. This recording is just another reminder that there was only one pianist who mastered that language.

Младший сын Rick'а Oliver Wakeman(keyb) в содружестве с вездесущим клавишником Clive'ом Nolan'ом(Arena, Shadowland, Pendragon, etc,etc..) выдали альбом, не уступающий творениям самого папаши Wakeman'а. На сказочный сюжет(мальчик с помщью природы,друзей и, конечно, девочки побеждает злого дракона Jabberwocky,терроризирующего город) они сотворили рок-оперу. Как водится, были приглашены известные личности - Bob Catley, Tracy Hitchings, James Plumridge, Pete Gee, Ian Salmon, Peter Banks, Tony Fernandez...Не забыли также и старика Rick'а, правда в качестве чтеца. Получилось всё здорово, свежо и красиво. Прекрасные мелодии, отличные аранжировки, обилие клавиш, есть даже просто музыкальные находки. Короче, есть чем насладиться(и не один день).

Although this is a one time studio blowing session, things obviously gelled quickly for everyone as they got underway on this 1962 recording by Red Garland, which features both Blue Mitchell and Pepper Adams in prominent supporting roles. The pianist gets things off on the right foot with his relaxed blues "Red's Good Groove," while Mitchell, who had already recorded a number of dates as a leader himself, delivers a confident yet understated trumpet solo. Baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams contributed the oddly named "Excerent!" (a title which somewhat puzzled the original liner note writer Peter Drew but likely refers to the tendency of some Orientals to substitute the letter "r" for "l," long before such humor would be considered politically incorrect and unlikely to appear on a CD jacket), it's a hard bop tune that isn't the least bit reminiscent of the Far East. The core of the date consists of several standards, concluding with a driving take of "Falling in Love With Love." Bassist Sam Jones and drummer Philly Joe Jones supply the fluid rhythm that powers the quintet throughout this very enjoyable session.

Zelmani's fourth album may at first sound laid back and a little vague. But listen to it closely, on high volume, and the air of being laid back disappears instead showing a very sensitive album, intensive in a careful and seemingly shy way. As usual Lars Halapi is the producer and the sound is similar to Zelmani's and his previous releases. A bit more solemn than Time to Kill, more country than the debut, and with some songs reminding even more of Dylan's Oh Mercy and Time Out of Mind than did Precious Burden. Commercially speaking Zelmani should probably release something more different, something that would produce headlines and make it easy to differ between her albums, but artistically she has shown an unusual and determined development in a clearly confined area, almost possible to examine scientifically. There may be a few more steps to take when it comes to lyrics writing, but if Zelmani uses some standard phrases, she does manage to load them with a whole lot of sincerity. The other possible complaint is the often mentioned even mood of the album (and of her last two albums), but Zelmani and Halapi have come close to perfecting this melancholy and sparse countryesque sound, as can be heard in "Once," a duet with Freddie Wadling.

Jackie DeShannon's work is actually too diverse to be satisfactorily captured on an anthology, even one that includes 28 tracks, as this one does, but it has to be cited as the recommended first purchase. Focusing on her output for Liberty between 1959 and 1970, it has all the essentials: her two Top Ten hits, the minor hits like "A Lifetime of Loneliness," and the original versions of "Needles and Pins" and "When You Walk in the Room," and a host of fine girl group, ballad, folk-rock, and singer/songwriter flop singles. From the collector's viewpoint, the most interesting songs are the rarities. The six previously unreleased tracks include the exuberant "Breakaway," a hit for Irma Thomas; the rocker "Dream Boy," cut in 1964 in Britain with Jimmy Page on guitar; and a cover of Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe." A couple of interesting rarities are "For Granted" (from the little-seen movie C'mon, Let's Live a Little) and the 45 version of "Splendor in the Grass," a somewhat sloppy folk-rock performance on which DeShannon was backed by the Byrds.
